Fun and Interesting Autumn Facts

Ahhhh… Autumn, my favorite season of all, personally of course. I thought to myself, since we have now been in Autumn for a few days now why not just talk about this beautiful season… There are facts and myths and all other cool and/or interesting things to learn about this season so let’s jump right to it.

A Few Interesting Facts:

      • Autumns full mood is called, The Harvest Moon. Long ago farmers would take advantage of the Harvest Moon’s light to “harvest” their crops because in late summer and early autumn many crops would ripen all at once. This made farmers have to stay in the fields long after sundown to harvest them and the moonlight became essential to their harvest.
      • Autumn is the official Aurora Season, the aurora borealis also called the northern lights. Due to the amount of the geomagnetic storms and the particles that get thrown into Earths magnetic field they bump into atoms and molecules of oxygen and nitrogen. In return we get amazing light shows with beautiful colors.
      • September 22nd is the autumn equinox, there are 2 each year and the other is in March at the start of spring, on this day the day and night are equal in length, the word equinox comes from the Latin word meaning “equal night” and during these two days you are able to stand an egg on its end!

Fall Temperature Facts:

      • Due to cooler temperatures you sleep longer
      • Due to cooler temperatures you are naturally more likely to fall in love
      • Due to photosynthesis stopping during cooler temperatures the leaves on trees turn to beautiful vibrant colors
      • Indian Summer, this is when there is a heat wave in autumn which usually occurs between late September and mid November

Fall Food Facts:

      • Apples can prevent Alzheimer’s and are a natural tooth whitener
      • The smell of pumpkin pie is a natural aphrodisiac
      • Pumpkins were once used to remove freckles and cure snake bites
      • Bobbing for apples originated in Roman times


      • In Greek mythology it is said that in autumn Persephone (Goddess of Spring, daughter of Zeus and the Harvest-Goddess Demeter) rejoins Hades in the underworld as his queen.
